Unlocking samsung sgh-u700 prepaid

hi i bought my son this phone and its locked to optus and he cant afford to pay the $80 to unlock it and as it was bought out right they wont do it unless he has been with them for six months however he likes his telstra deal and does not wish to change carriers can anyone help with this
