Wear twists or dreadlocks in some circles and you might be seen as too independent, too different -- too black....do you agree?

  1. I think to some people they would rather see black people with straight hair or weaves becuase it looks better to them than black hair they way it naturaly is.

  2. I don't agree.  I think twists and locks are very fashionable.

  3. I don't agree, I wear my hair in either twists or a fro most of the time.. and I never have any problem

  4. it depends on how good you make it look and how you keep it up

it doesn't look good on everybody but in  black town or community no one gives a d***.

  5. I think no matter what style you choose to wear, as long as it is neat and clean, who cares?  It's no different than when white people take on the punker style and wear blue, pink and green in their hair.  Twists and dreadlocks are part of certain cultures.  I see white people who wear dreads.  It's a personal choice.

The only thing that bothers me is when the dreads, twists and even braids just look plain dirty and unkept.  I've seen people that just look like they were homeless.

  6. My hair is permed but I disagree. People wear their hair the way they want. I wear twists, braids and I get my hair done with hard styles at the salon and I don't consider myself no different and no better than anyone else. Hair does not make anyone independent, different, or a black. It's the person themselves that makes one independent or different. Hair has nothing to do with it.

  7. I disagree. Look below:

Being a little different shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. Whats wrong with individuality? If a person doesn't want to wear their hair like everybody else, they shouldn't be criticized for it. Besides, this country has 300,000,000+ people in it, if we are all doing the same thing, what are we accomplishing?

  8. I disagree, but perhaps it is because I live in NYC, but I see women (even mixed women) with natural hair quite frequently and it is clear that they have white-collar jobs so I'd imagine that it is accepted in many social circles. I perm my hair to make it more manageable for me (I have very curly hair, which is even more trouble than the average woman of color's hair, in my opinion) so this really isn't an issue for me. But when I do have it out naturally, I often get compliments from our fairer skinned counterparts. I guess it all depends on your social circle. I think if you can pull it off, more power to you!

  9. Errr your point?

    I dont get this question.

    sorry.

  10. its absolutely true. i definitely see this as a problem in our community. like im only 18 and although i straighten my hair sometimes most of the time i just wear my hair out natural. its just like a curly afro thing - no dreads no twists (h**l no. i look terrible in them and im not knotting my hair up lol ).

i guess for me it has been both a lesson learned and a statement. on the one hand, i kind of ****** up my hair early in middle school (i was 11 maybe) so i just kind of never got relaxers again lol on the other hand, i hate that white oppression can be seen in almost every facet of society including beauty. ive heard people talk about how women with darker skin are unattractive, how relaxed hair is better, smaller noses, etc. i used to talk that way until i realized exactly what i was supporting. im not mixed but white people sometimes get that impression and i would actually lie to them when i was a kid because i wanted to be mixed in reality. you know the whole "oh my grandma or great aunt or somebody was native american, white, etc." looking back now... its all so disgusting to me. there was a time in ancient history when african features were praised and we were beautiful just the way we were. european dominance in society is the root of our modern day obsession with looking more white. and h**l yeah thats exactly what it is: to permanently straighten your hair not simply because you like the way it looks but because your own natural hair isnt "good hair" (no such thing ppl sorry) is in my opinion trying to look more acceptable to mainstream beauty. and today that is "white". i would hate to know what our ancestors would think of what the world has become and how we generally see things as black people living in a white world. i actually like my hair better when its not straight. its a great conversation starter for one lol and it is a statement in my mind. more and more black women are going natural these days and i think thats awesome. it may seem like a small feat but it truly says something about how you view yourself and yes how independent you are from what the mainstream says.

all kinds of hair are equally great in my opinion its just how you work it lol i do love straight hair when its cut in a really interesting way, colored, unique. just long and straight though? i mean it gets boring. to me anyway.

obviously diversity is wonderful and i  have friends who relax their hair (duh) but it is what it is. everyone’s always shocked at what i have to say because ive never dated black guys and i guess they see that as a reflection on my perspective on beauty.  i just think black women have been so diminished to not only a stereotype but also certain acceptable physical standards in society.

enough is enough! Say it loud: im black and im proud lol

  11. Society sets standards. If you do not conform to that standard, you are deemed as an outcast.

That reason thus meaning I can't wear a cheetah-skinned bikini (even though I'm a Male) and run through Walmart singing Michael Jackson's "Beat It".
