Unprecedented performance brings Tommy Sugiarto back in Indonesia’s national squad – Badminton news
Indonesia’s Men’s Singles shuttler, Tommy Sugiarto, who was dropped from the national squad in the start of last year, is accepted back as he has been displaying an unprecedented performance for the last one year.
In June, 2010, the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) dropped Sugiarto from the national team because of his poor performance. Since then, the spirited shuttler has been training hard and performing well in international events, which helped him to get back in the Men’s Singles national squad again.
Sugiarto has won three titles in the current year showing that he is in tremendous form at the moment. His wonderful display of top-class badminton has also earned him Number 18 position in the Men’s Singles world rankings. Considering his tremendous run in the current year, PBSI have also announced his name for next month’s SEA Games, which will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Sugiarto, the son of the former World Champion and badminton legend, Icuk Sugiarto, is happy with the fact that PBSI have recognised his improved performance and have accepted him back in the national squad. He said, “This really is an honour for me because [the PBSI] recognizes my achievements despite the fact I’m no longer in the national training camp. I’ll do my best for the country.”
He further added, “I have a big responsibility on my shoulders right now, and I will work hard not to disappoint the fans.”
The spirited Indonesian’s first title of the current year was the 2011 Iran Fajr International. His second title came at the 2011 Indonesia International Challenge, after which he went on to win the 2011 Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold in style.
Now, Sugiarto will be in action at the SEA Games along with country’s top shuttler, Taufik Hidayat, Simon Santoso and Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka in the Men’s Singles category. Getting back in the national team is a big boost to Sugiarto’s confidence and he is determined to deliver his hundred percent to win glory for his country.
