Question:

Unruly staff at new job?

So I just got a new job as an assistant manager of a spa. I've been there about a month and the staff is out of control! They talk back to me, tell me flat out no, they won't do their job, one person even yelled at me when I asked her to complete a regularly assigned task, they make fun of everyone behind their backs and make up lies and rumors. It is like being back in high school. The bigger part of the problem is that the boss does nothing about it, and they know that she won't. She has no disciplinary system in place at all. So my choices are to either not do my job correctly (which is not in m nature) and just let the staff act up and not try to enforce anything or I act like the manager that I am and sit back and take the abuse of the staff.

I have been told that I have lasted longer than any assistant manager before so this has been an ongoing problem that the boss will not do anything about. I am miserable going to work everyday. I have managed drama-filled staffs before but I have never before encountered such an immature group of adults (heck, even the high school kids that I have managed before were not this bad).

My question is do I leave this job after only a month (which looks bad on my resume) or do I stick it out and suffer a hostile work environment?

  1. Don't put it on you resume.........leave.............don't stick it out...........

  2. My sister worked in your industry.  She couldn't stand it; she said it's the most unprofessional, caddy, immature environment on the planet.  They are insecure, shallow girls who only think what's on the outside matters.

If you are smart, get out now........you will go no where in that industry.

    Good luck to you!

  3. It's only been a month. Don't put it on your resume'. Find a new job and don't look back. If the owner/manager won't back you then you are looking at a sinking ship, anyway. A business cannot last very long that allows employees to act like that. ESPECIALLY a service oriented one like a spa. If they act like that to the clientele, the members will not renew their memberships. I'm sure the employees are talking smack about each other. Clients don't like to hear that kind of thing and will bail as soon as their memberships expire.

  4. Have you considered going over the head of the manager.  Does the corporation which owns the spa realize what is happening?  Write or call the main office and request a personal visit from the executive management.  Let your manager know you are taking these steps and the rep of the company can be seriously damaged by the actions she is allowing.
