Question:

Unsure college graduate

I graduated college with an Associate's degree in Computer Science, concentration in Networking Security & Management, but I don't realy feel like I learned anything...especially in networking. I've never been, and PLEASE don't take this personally, a "computer geek." However, I do enjoy working on computers from time to time. I just feel like my peers know so much more, eventhough I'm just as qualified "on paper". Is it normal to feel this way? Thanks.

  1. There's a few reasons why you are feeling this way. First, an associates degree doesn't hold much water any longer. It largely depends on where you got it, but there's a lot of places that just want your money and try and shove information into you without making sure you retain that information.

Second, these people you are working with are geeks. I am one so I can say this. We have tinkered with computers since we could flip a power switch and have an almost intuitive grasp of how they work. You picked one h**l of a field to go into without a strong background.

Third, they have more experience than you. You'll get there. Be patient, listen, ask questions. Don't be afraid to fail, but think before you speak. If you do something wrong admit it! Hiding mistakes in IT makes it very hard to troubleshoot. And when they discover what happened you'll lose credibility.

Last, these geeks that know so much more than you? They don't know everything. It's impossible to. Technology is moving so fast that nobody can work and keep up with everything. But they SOUND like they do, so people believe them. Most IT troubleshooting is very basic and simple, which makes people look like gurus. Learn some of the little tricks and you're there!

Stay strong and keep your chin up! Everyone has gone through what you are going through and it sucks, but it does get better. Good luck!

  2. lol you didnt learn anything from college because you proberly learnt it yourself . ^^ that is why im not going into computers.

if you want to challenge yourself you could try and study for the Cisco test. If you pass you get a certifcate and is really well respected when getting hired.

There are alos 6-7 microsoft certifcate you could go for and they are well respected as well .
