Question:

Unused/unmaintained spa: Is it restorable?

I purchased my house over a year and a half ago.

It has a very nice wood deck and pergola in the back yard.

It also has a spa which I estimate has not been used or maintained for nearly 2 years now.

I have gotten the rest of the back yard perfect, now I am wondering if the spa is restorable?

I want to call a repair person and of course it costs $200 just to get someone out to the house nowadays. Is the spa salvageable or should I just remove it and throw it out? A new one would be $4K and I would be willing to spend up to $500 or so to salvage this one.

Thanks

  1. fill it up and turn it on. If it works then thats half the battle. If you live in a cold climate the housing could of cracked and will slowly leak or the water in the pvc pipes could of froze and cracked.  $500 dollars isn't much of a budget for a spa.  A new cover if you don't have one is costly.  You will also need a pH testing kit, filter, and chemicals to maintain it get very costly on a yearly basis. Spas take a lot of chlorine to keep up.Plus the added electricity of the water pump running.  You also have to wonder about the pump and what condition it is in. If it ran dry or if it is old it could burn out very soon if it isn't already toast.(filling it and running it will find this out) I have owned spas and pools for twenty years and they take time and money to maintain. Spa pumps burn out pretty often and the electrical could also get wet and corrode. If it has a digital screen, the gasket could fail and the whole screen and computer need to be replaced.

  2. Fill it up, turn it on and see if it works.

You probably can fix it. But first you need to see if it has much in the way of damage from water freezing.

You can spend a lot of money very quickly trying to repair a spa, but Sometimes all it needs is a good cleaning or some minor electrical work.

The answer to your question is that it depends on what is wrong with the spa, if anything.

But it cost practically nothing to fill it up and turn it on.
