Unusual stuff from Tiger, he has committed to Bridgestone
Tiger Woods has announced that he will be participating at this year’s WGC-Bridgestone. The event will be taking place in August, at Firestone Country Club, in Ohio.
Of course, there is every reason to play at the WGC-Bridgestone, as there is no cut and the prize money is huge.
Tiger Woods is a seven-time winner of the event and he last won in 2009. For those who follow Tiger, this is surely a surprise for them, as never in his career has Woods committed to a tournament so early.
Normally, he confirms a week prior to the event, but this gives a great opportunity to the organizers to advertise the event.
The PGA regulation says that players are allowed to register with a tournament the preceding Friday, in case of Bridgestone that would be 27th July.
This announcement by Tiger has given time to the organizers to attract sponsors and sell tickets.
They can attract people by selling tickets with Tiger’s name. Last year Tiger committed to the event very late and finished at T37.
“This is the earliest Tiger has entered since I have been here,” Executive Director Don Padgett II shared.
According to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, “Last year he waited until the Thursday or Friday before, which is his right. But having him commit early is a plus”.
Tiger’s commitment means that organizers can now attract more sponsors and sell tickets more easily. The field at the WGC-Bridgestone is always expected to have big names, as there is no cut and prize money is huge, it is a staggering $8.5 million.
The likes of Bubba Watson and the world number 1 Luke Donald are also expected to grace the event with their presence.
However, the presence of the US Open champion Webb Simpson is in doubt because he and his wife are expecting a child at the same time.
Tiger Woods will be appearing next at the AT&T National next week, being held at Congressional Country Club.
The fourteen-time major champion is expected to make a strong come back after his disappointing finish at the US Open.
Tiger said, “I had a chance this week and I'll get after it in another week in DC [at Congressional]”.
