My mum who is in her 60's and widowed, keeps getting calls for someone who used to stay beside her. After some investigations, I found out they are all from Debt Collectors, and they keep asking her stuff about this old neighbour. She isnt telling them anything, but its really starting to upset her. She signed up for the Telephone Preference Service, but she is still getting these calls.

How can we stop this as it is upestting all the family seeing her distressed by this?

  1. you coulld just change the number its free if your having bother, then leave it x directory

  2. go  X Directory and you still keep the same number and when anyone calls her she just says how did you get this number???as this is a private number call there bluff till its sorted and say all calls are being intercepted by the police tell her not to get upset I know its easily said but we all get these pestering calls when she picks up tell her to listen to who it is not to speak and do deep heavy breathing then hag up they ll then get the message take care hope your mums OK

  3. Go to www.donotcall.gov and register your numbers that these non-personal calls or unwanted calls are calling. All callers who haven't been given your number by YOU will be notified that your number must not be called. This works with cell phones too. If you get a call after signing up, you have the legal right to inform the police and they will pursue the debt collectors. (from your case it sounds like harassment and that's something that should be taken to the authorities.) I won't give legal advice...but from emotional distress and harassment...you got yourself a legal claim.

  4. The Police will not deal with this type of incident.  It is a matter for the service provider.  I would also suggest gaining the name and address of the companies calling and write them a stern letter threatening civil action.  The CAB may help her, but a letter from your solicitor certainly would do the trick.

  5. www.donot call!

  6. The only suggestion is to report the fact she is getting harrassment calls to the police, then ask them for a crime reference number.

Then call BT and explain the situation and they will change her number upon request.

  7. call bt and report your nuisance calls, and by law if you tell them not to call again and they do they are breaking the law. which would involve the police i think or at least BT enforcemnent via legal action etc
