  1. tps definately...they are telephone preference service...will make it an offence for businesses to ring you so they must take you off their list. It worked for me, with 1 reoccurence but a quick phonecall stopped it again. dont worry tho, companies sometimes tap in the wrong number on their autodialler and until it is highlighted it will just keep happening. unfortunately nothing to do with bt or virgin, but tps will definately help!

ps if you have anonymous call reject as suggested this means you will not recieve calls from any of your family/friends who do not display their number..would use as a last resort....nuisance call bureau will only help you to get in touch with tps so wont be much use, unless of course you ARE getting malicious calls in which case you need to contact the police in the first instance

  2. Sounds like a malicious call.

Don't give them any reaction to latch on to.  For some losers, getting under other peoples' skin is the only way they can feel 'important', because at heart they have no self esteem. It's sad, if you can see past being pissed off, but they'll grow out of it eventually, as they get older and achieve something they can feel is worthwhile in their life.

Don't go out of your way to help them - you can't.

There is a simple mechanism at work here, and you can follow one of two patterns:

1 (i) They call and hear you throw a hissy fit

    (ii) They feel powerful/important/excited

(iii) They repeat again later on, in order to recapture those feelings.

    2. (i) They call, you ask who it is, normally, if there's no reply you hang up. If you feel angry or frustrated you only vent after you've hung up, so you don't reward or reinforce their behaviour.

(ii) They feel bored and disappointed.

(iii) They are less likely to do it again.

One caveat, at first, on option 2, they might try to call more (immediately after the first failed attempt) to get thier reaction. If you have caller ID and can spot them. If this happens, unplug your phone for a short while.

They won't respond by calling at several different times during the day because that would take lots of effort for no emotional reward, and pull them away from whatever they started doing when they gave up last time it didn't work.

Hopefully your problem should be sorted out soon.

Alternatively they might be some loser admirer who doesn't have the balls to speak to you, trying to gain some ridiculous form of contact with you. Same response on your part - ignore, hang up, only vent when they can't here.

  3. Probably a prank call. You could take it to the police.

  4. you might be able to benefit from TPS (Telephone Preference Scheme) but from the type of calls you are getting I would say it probably wouldn't help much as the calls aren't business.

I am assuming you are in the UK by the way.

You can ask BT for Anonymous Call Reject which means that only people who release their number to you can get to dial your phone. I've not worked at BT for a year or two now but when I left it was free for a month and then cost money.

If for some reason this still persists you can speak with the Nuisance Call Bureau who will advise you from there.

    Best of luck

  5. If the 1471 message says that, "the information is not available", and not, "The caller withheld their number", then the chances are that it is an auto dial from overseas.  a computer isw random dialing the numers and whoever answers first gets a telesales message.  If it is NOT you that answers first, you get a dead line.  I think there is help you can get for this but it is difficult as the TPS is really only recognised in the UK.

  6. I reccommend TPS service too!

  7. t could be a company trying to sell you something and you get their computer .. register with tps .. link

or a nuisance caller .. contact your telephone service provider.not sure about Virgin, but BT stopped my nuisance caller ... they do the prosecuting too
