Up In Time surprises her foes as she pulled out a San Clemente upset at Del Mar
Another day in the Del Mar’s 37 days' meet provided a long shot comeback-from-behind upset when the 11 to 1 recent British import, Up In Time, produced an upset in the $150,000 Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap at the Del Mar Turf on 24 July.
The 3-year-old filly landed her second race of her career, first one was the 6 ½ furlong dash in an Allowance race at Santa Anita.
Jockey Rafael Bejarano, who was riding the filly for the first time did an impressive job as he held her off the pace in mid pack entering the stretch.
The pair chased the pace setter 19 to 10 favourite Mizdirection and emerged out of the mid pack to defeat her by 1 ¼ lengths.
In the early part of the race, Mizdirection the 3-year-old grey filly opened up a considerable lead in the stretch and toed 9 other fillies but only to finish second when she got taken over by Up In Time.
Celestial Kitten showed a promising run, rallied along on the inside, failed to catch up and finished third.
The other favoured filly who was also sent at 19 to 10 odds was Sarah’s Secret, winner of the Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap last month, could not keep up to the pace and faded away early in the race but a last surge from the three-year-old helped her finish
sixth out of 10 other fillies.
Up In Time is trained by Simon Callaghan for owner Anthony Ramsden, she covered the 1 mile distance in a strong 1 minute 34.66 seconds over firm going.
Previously, Up In Time participated in the Grade 2 Honeymoon at Hollywood Park on 11 June. Under jockey M Garcia the pair finished fifth over at a distance of 1 1/8 miles.
The cut back in distance proved to suit Up In Time’s style of running, jockey Rafael Bejarano had her in a great position to initiate the final burst.
The filly proved that she is definitely a miler and on 24 July she showed that it is her optimum distance.
Up In Time, imported from Britain, has run thrice in England as she went on to break her maiden there.
She was brought to the United States in Southern California to run in the 2011 season.
Up till now the filly has ran five times in the U.S and recorded her second win at Del Mar.
Up In Time has gone on to win three times from her eight starts, with the career earnings of $138,576.
The three year old bay filly Carousel was an early and only scratch of the race.
