  1. The $19,000 will go straight into your tuition.

  2. If it's normal financial aid, scholarships, or loans...the money will go straight to the school and be there waiting for you when you get there.  The financial aid office at the school can confirm whether or not your money has arrived.  Once the school gets the money, they will allocate the funds where they need to...tuition, fees, etc.  If you have money left over, you may also get to purchase a meal plan with it and possibly books.  At my college we had a card, sort of like a debit card, that we could have whatever amount of our left over money put on that we wanted.  Then we could use the card on campus for things like books and food.  Once all is paid, if there is any money left over, you will be issued a refund check.  This usually takes a couple of months though.  If you still owe more money, you (or your parents) will get a letter saying how much you own and the deadline to pay.
