Up in Time pointed toward the Matriarch Stakes to face older fillies and mares
Trainer Simon Callaghan had mentioned that the Grade 1, $250,000 Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park on 25 November, 2011, at about 1 mile on grass is a possibility for his 3-year-old filly, Up in Time, after coming off her second stakes win of the year.
The daughter of Noverre, out of Up At Dawn by Inchinor, Up in Time is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Harold C Ramser Stakes at Santa Anita Park on 16 October, 2011, under jockey Martin Garcia.
The race was run over at a distance of 1 mile over the Santa Anita Park’s turf course, where the filly held off the favourite, Celestial Kitten and Bauble Queen, who finished second and third respectively, winning the grade 3 event with the winning time
of 1 minute and 34.25 seconds.
On 24 July, 2011, Up in Time represented her connections in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar also at a mile on grass.
The Anthony Ramsden and Three Chimneys Farm owned 3-year-old filly, Up in Time defeated Mizdirection and Celestial Kitten yet again in the mile long race, where she topped the distance in 1 minute and 34.66 seconds.
In between, Up in Time had a little hiccup, when she finished a disappointing seventh in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on 20 August, 2011, over at distance of 1 1/8 miles.
The top three were Summer Soiree, Star Billing and Nereid, as Summer Soiree wrapped up the 1 1/8 mile distance in a good 1 minute and 46.46 seconds.
The Matriarch Stakes has a reputation of drawing a strong field, and it already has the Grade 1 Del Mar Oak winner, Summer Soiree lined up to participate in the race, but the filly couldn’t do much in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland,
where she finished fifth.
After getting a disappointing trip in the Del Mar Oaks, Up in Time is ready to take on older fillies and mares for the first time in a stakes race.
She has gone on to win 4 starts out of 10 lifetime starts, with the earnings of $198,576 so far.
