I have a new hdtv, specifically this: "http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260...

I was thinking of getting a 1080p upconverting dvd player since they're pretty inexpensive. Are they worth it?

  1. No, not worth it. Get a Blu-Ray disc player instead.

  2. It is worth it only on dvd players with a quality scaler chip inside.  As I've stated numerous times on this board, none offer better scaling than the Oppos.

  3. Well, this is where they get you.  An up-converting DVD player will take a standard def. DVD and up-convert it to HD or near HD quality for an improved picture on your HD TV.  If you have an extensive library of standard def. DVDs, then yes, it's worth it.  However, you can't play Blu-ray on anything but a Blu-ray player.  With the death of HD DVD, Sony has got you by the throat....

  4. Yes they can be worth it if your looking for a cheap way to get a better picture. Keep in mind though that anything that has to convert an image will lose some of the quality in the process. ie. digital cable. Also make sure that you get better cables than the ones in the box, not the really expensive but the ones somewhere in the middle. Also since the link provided did not allow me to see the Tv I would have to remind you to check and make sure your tv can display 1080p and not just 1080i
