Updated format of German Masters
The updated format for the incipient tournament of the German Masters has been announced recently, the tournament starts from 2nd February 2011.
The tournament will start off with the ‘Wild Card’ round, as sixteen players, who have been awarded wild cards into the tournament, will battle to book a place in the later rounds of the tournament.
The wild card, Maurice Le Duc, has withdrawn and will not participate in the event, however, he has been replaced by local favorite Pavel Leyk.
Pavel will face Anthony Hamilton in the wild card round, and the winner of this match will take on the ‘thunder from down under’ Neil Robertson.
Players, who have been awarded wild cards for the German Masters, include:

Anthony Hamilton Pavel Leyk Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon Tomasz Skalski Jack Lisowski Luca Bresel Liu Song Daniel Wells Nigel Bond Stefan Kasper Anthony McGill Mario Wehrmann Joe Swail Hans Blanckaert Robert Milkins Lasse Munstermann
Apart from these wild card players world top-16 and the qualifiers will take part in the competition to win the first ever German Masters.
The tournament will be based on five rounds prior to the final match, as after the wild card round, the tournament will move on to the regular last-32 where the wild card winners, qualifiers and world’s top-16 will battle each other in order to move to the
last-16 round and eventually to the quarter-finals and concluding rounds.
Each match will be the best of nine frames until the semi-finals, as the semi-final matches will consist of eleven frames whereas the final will be the best of a seventeen frames match.
The German Masters was started as German Open back in 1995 as a ranking tournament and it remained as a ranking event until 1998, however, its name was changed to German Masters and status to a non-ranking event.
Now once again the event has been made a part of the snooker calendar, as it will be held in February 2011 as a professional ranking event. The action packed event signifies the growth of snooker in European countries especially Germany, which is also home
to many EPTC events.
The incipient event is a great blend of young and old talent alike, as the top-16, qualifiers and wild card players will face each other, the event will take place at the Tempodrom, Berlin, Germany from 2nd until 6th February.
