Updates from the Tennis World
Wozniacki may join forces with Berdych for Czech tennis club
World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki recently agreed to compete professionally for the Czech tennis league, provided that it reaches the finals on Saturday. The Agrofert Prostejov team is full of stars from the tennis world, such as
Czech No. 1 Tomas Berdych, Kazakhstan pro Andrey Golubev and Petra Kvitova (who defeated Wozniacki at the All England Club).
Another member of the club’s alumni is former World No. 1 Martina Hingis, who helped the team win their 1997 title.
Zheng Jie pulls out of Hong Kong exhibition and Hobart tournament
World No. 26 Zheng Jie was forced to drop out of an exhibition match she was scheduled to play in Hong Kong due to soreness in her left wrist. She underwent surgery on this wrist in September, and has also been forced to drop out
of the upcoming Hobart tournament because of this. The Chinese professional tennis player is a challenging addition to the WTA, a fact that she managed to prove at the semifinals of the 2010 Australian Open nearly a year ago.
Her place in the Hong Kong exhibition match will be taken by Zhang Ling. Ling, along with Mark Philippoussis and Li Na, are part of the Asia-Pacific team.
CoCo Vandeweghe, Jack Sock and others win Australian Open wildcard openers
Top seed American pro CoCo Vandeweghe defeated Madison Keys 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round of the USTA’s Aussie Open Wildcard Playoffs for a chance to compete in the January tournament. Other WTA results include Orange Bowl
champion Lauren Davis’s 7-5, 7-5 victory over Jamie Hampton, Beatrice Capra and her 6-2, 6-3 ousting of Shelby Rogers, and Krista Hardeback’s defeat of Irina Falconi in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
On the ATP side, US Open boys’ champion Jack Sock managed to defeat top seed Donald Young in a three set match, with a final scoreline of 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4. Sock will now compete against Dennis Kudla, who he defeated once before
in New York. Kudla defeated Jordan Cox in a straight sets match. Other results, include last year’s winner Ryan Harrison’s 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 6-4 victory over Michael Shabaz, and Rhyne Williams's 6-4, 6-0 defeat of Tim Smyczek.
