I have a 10 seer unit. I find it hard to believe that upgrading to a 14 seer unit can save you 25-45 percent off your monthly electric bill? The AC guy said his company quotes 25% but it can be as high as 45%

  1. number 1 is correct, number 2 you get a big negative you will never recover your money on a 19 seer unit...for what you will pay for it, how i know, work at a hvac supply house.........

  2. Don't remember what the SEER rating was but in my old house, I switched from a regular outdoor A/C unit to a heat pump and my electric bill was cut in 1/2.

Have a heat pump in this house and electric only runs  $70-$150.  Thermostat stays around 79.

  3. A simple answer is, don't fix it until it's broken. You would never be able to offset the amount you would pay by just changing it for the purpose of saving a few bucks. In order to have ultimate savings, you would need to have matching evaporator, and furnace. When your equipment is worn out, upgrade at that time. Thanks.

  4. If your end up upgrading,(I agree w/above statement)

Go for 19 seer or higher, for maximum savings.
