Question:

Upgrading Bundy flute?

I've been playing the flute for 4 years now, and my teacher suggested I upgrade it. I'm playing my mom's Bundy flute now, and its about 30 years old now. I have no idea what to look for or any brands that are better than others. Any help? Thanks!

  1. Armstrong, Yamaha, Pearl , Jupiter, Gemeinhardt are all reptuable brands! ( I am sure there are more but none come to my foggy brain this early in the morning) What you look for depends on the sound that you want! Best thing is to go to your local music shop and try a few out. Take your Flute teacher if you can! What does he/she say about brands to buy? They would have a better idea about which brands suit your playing then total strangers!

If you find a flute brand that you are unsure about google it and see what people say! You could ask in one of the email flute lists that are online! These are email lists that have other professional flute players/ teacher etc on them that discuss flute related things. Larry Krantz has one the address in below

  2. Hey Zoe

You can check out the Armstrong flute which is very well known. The prices rance from $125 to over $1500

  3. HI ZG.

I want to save you time and trouble by not confusing you with this name brand flute and that name brand flute.   If you are buying a new flute,  upgrading from the Bundy,  I would go into the music store in your city and ask to try their Yamahas.  The upgrade from the Bundy student model flute is the Yamaha YFL 385.  It has a sterling silver headjoint - silver plated body and footjoint - Bfoot - open holes.  Nice, Nice flute.  Once you put your lips to the flute,  you will think you have gone to flute players' heaven.   The cut of the embouchure hole makes for very free and easy blowing.  Your first few notes will feel like you are hardly blowing but making a HUGE sound.   Once you are there,  you can and should try out their other models, of course,  but I think you will be happy with what you find in the Yamaha 385.  One bit of advice... if they have the flute Trevor Wye - stay away from it.... I don't care how good it sounds.  These are poorly crafted and start to show problems in a very short time.  Stay away from that one.   But do give the others a blow... you want to make sure you get the best flute FOR you.
