how do i know what memory module to buy because i have a custom built pc?

Find out what ram the motherboard supports. Can also try going here and clicking on "Scan my system" which will tell you what your ram upgrade options are:

Your motherboard is key in determining the type, speed and capacity of the Ram memory modules that is compatible with the board. If you received a manual when you purchased the motherboard then it should be in there.

If you don't have the manual then go to the motherboard's manufacturer's web site and download the manual from there.
