Question:

Upright freezer not cooling

When we went to get some ice cream out of the freezer last night, and we found that everything was almost all thawed out....some things were still frozen though. When taking the food out, we noticed that the bottom 3 shelves were free from any frost but the top shelf was full. The steaks we had up there looked like they were packed in snow towards the back. I defrosted top shelf and cleaned the whole thing out. We turned the freezer back on and it was rather loud for about the first minute or maybe less but then sounded like the normal humm you hear. We put a bottle of water on each shelf to see if they were frozen in the morning. When we checked it this morning, the water bottles were not frozen but the freezer was cold. Since the freezer was not full of food, would it take longer than overnight for the water to freeze? There is a coil that weaves back and forth sandwiched between each shelf....on the top shelf, the back coil was frosted over starting from the rear corner and continuing across the back of the freezer and then around the first "u" turn and about 4 inches back the other way...then it just stopped. None of the other shelves or the front part of the top shelf showed any frost or signs of cooling.

Do you have any idea what could be wrong and does it sound like something my husband and I could fix ourselves? (he's pretty handy)

I haven't cleaned the coils yet but plan on doing that this morning to see if that makes a difference.

The freezer is from Sears and is about 15 years old.

Thank you for any help you could offer.
