Ups and Downs of being a cop?

I am thinking about becoming a police officer and want to know the pros and cons to choosing this as my career

decent pay, great retirement, lotsa perks. The hours can be bad.

Dangerous,  people generally trust you,  few friends everyone is breaking the law,  alcoholism & Sucidie is a big problem,  not a lot of raises.

Power however is the one thing you get but if you abuse it well you get to go to jail.

I myself am interested in law enforcement....My grandfather(was) and a lot of people I know are cops.

Pros - helping the community by doing a job you believe in, rewarding, comraderie, adrenaline rush.

Cons-politics, not having enough time for family/friends(personal relationships), paperwork,

If it's something you truly believe in and you believe in putting  a lot of time into helping your community/state, then it's something you should at least try to do. If your into reading....You should check out "A Cop's Life" and "True Blue" by Sgt. Randy Sutton.  Awesome books that really tell you what it's like to be a cop. Being a cop sometimes means long hours, boring shift, lotsa paperwork, no family time, being tired, working detail sitting in your cruiser on a highway, and other times it's adrenaline, planning every move to be your last, thinking, reacting, upholding and image that is socially acceptable even when your not on duty. It's a job that is not all about the glory and should never be taken for that reason. It's about helping people and making a difference.....Good Luck and Stay Safe!!

Pros-fun, exciting, the sense of accomplishment that you are doing something of benefit to your community, pay and benefits. Transferable skills should you chose a change in career later on (hardly a week goes by without us being contacted by "headhunters")

Cons-dealing with scum (both on the street, and the cop haters on YA!)
