Upscaling AVI to 1080p?

Question

I have many AVI video files and have seen some HD content that must have started life as SD (for example classic films). So how is this done and how do i do it?

Movie houses have an advantage over you I'm afraid. They shoot in film, which is far higher definition than SD video. When they want to air an old movie in HD, they run the film through the HD telecine machine and come out with an HD copy directly from the film.
