  1. Because of privacy issues, nobody can request information on someone else's tax returns.

If one of your parents call the IRS, they will receive a form to fill out and return to get the tax information.

To get the information the quickest way, one of your parents needs to go to an IRS walk-in office and request the information.  With proper identification, they will be given it immediately.

  2. Note for the future:  You should always print off and save a paper copy of your tax return when you file your taxes.

If your parents used an online tax service, they might be able to get a copy of the return by contacting the software provider.

Otherwise, if you have easy access to a fax machine, one of your parents may be able to call the IRS and get a transcript of their returns.  This is a computer printout of the information listed on your parents return.  This should give you the information that you need. You should look for form 4506T at www.irs. gov and print it off.  Have your parents fill it out, and if they call the IRS and can fax the form to the IRS, the IRS may fax the transcript back to them.  You will not be able to do this - it has to be one of your parents.

If they mail the form 4506T to the IRS it could take 6-20 weeks for them to process the request.

Make sure you get the 4506T form.  If you get the regular 4506 form, you will have to pay $39 per form, but you will get a full copy of the returns.

1-800-TAX-1040 is the IRS phone number.

  3. No.  Have your parents call IRS and ask for transcripts.

  4. there's no way to get them online...sorry...you'll have to order transcripts - note there is a 2-4 week wait on the copies - here's what the IRS says:

Need a Copy of Your Tax Return Information?

    Requesting transcripts (individuals):

You have two easy and convenient options for getting copies of your federal tax return information--tax return transcripts and tax account transcripts--by phone or by mail.

Request transcripts by calling 1-800-829-1040, or order by mail using IRS Form 4506T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return).   We do not charge a fee for transcripts.   Allow two weeks for delivery.

    Definitions:

A tax return transcript shows most line items from your tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules.  It does not reflect any changes you, your representative or the IRS made after the return was filed.  In many cases, a return transcript will meet the requirements of lending institutions such as those offering mortgages and for applying for student loans.

A tax account transcript shows any later adjustments either you or the IRS made after the tax return was filed.  This transcript shows basic data, including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income.
