  1. I'm not sure I have understood your question (especially the part about trains) but I have been to Marseille once and it is NOT a very nice city but it is surrounded by some beautiful things.

I had always heard Marseille people speak lovingly of the Canebière, some avenue which is supposed to be their Champs-Elysées but it is a dreary avenue and quite scary at night. Walking along the harbor would be nice if it was closed to car traffic but unfortunately it is not. The nice things to do in Marseille are: climb the hill to Notre Dame de la Garde basilica, take a ferry to the Château d'If island and visit the Calanques outside Marseille. They are fjords and are quite spectacular: http://www.beyond.fr/villages/marstours....

Menton is much cuter (I have never been though) but it is to France what Florida is to the US: a retirement place. So I don't know how lively it would be outside the summer season... http://www.menton.fr/rubrique.php3?id_ru...

The trip is a little over 3 hours from Paris to Marseille (high-speed train) as well as from Marseille to Menton (regular train that stops everywhere along the riviera).

EDIT: Where will you be traveling from?

The first link I gave was for info on the Calanques and the château d'If further down on the page, it wasn't for the little touristic train tours or bus tours. But I agree that Menton seems much more pleasant to visit.

  2. Millie has got it right in part about Marseille but despite all its faults, it does have a way of growing on you.  Le vieux port is a nice walk all around and a place that nobody ever goes is right at the top of the Canebiere where facing you is the most stunning rockface and garden and statuary ----if you go make a point of seeking it out.

Marseille has a definite North african feel and the markets are like souks.

Catch the bus for a half hour ride to Aix-en-Provence if you like chocolate-box France.

    Never been to Menton

    Best of luck
