Around my corner there's a little grocery store, and their constantly selling food products that are expired. Now I love the people there, and I buy most of my food products there, but recently I purchased a small cake there and I was sick to my stomach to only find out that the food was 2 months old. This is not the first time I've complained about it. Most of their products are way past there expiration dates, is there a hot line number I can call without having to give my name or number or where I live. I don't want them to know it's me, but I feel as if they should be reported before someone gets seriously sick. Thanks for the help.

  1. The best thing to do is always check the outdate when shopping and if you find something outdated, take it to the clerk and tell her/him that it is out dated.  If it is not handled, don't go anymore and tell them that is why.  They are in business and need to do it right before someone with a compromised immune system gets food poisoning and dies.  Be bold here and tell them the problem.

  2. call the local health department.  unless this is a real small town your name should not come up.  If you know the do this then it is on you to check everything you buy there or shop somewhere else.

Some people are ignorant of health safety laws and some people are just plain greedy and won't throw away profit because it hasn't sold yet.

Sometimes it is better to be friends with those we do not do business with.

  3. i agree with the first reply.  as long as you can give information without them knowing its you, you will be fine...they wont know it was you and you should report it not only for yourself but for other people too, think of your neighbors and their children who may eat food from there...

  4. call the Department of Public Health

  5. Since it's a small store, the store may not be selling the product fast enough before it expires.    The owners may not realize this is a problem, especially if the owners are an older couple.

You could call the food manufacturer to report that you bought an item which was past the expiration date.    The company may refund your money or give you coupons for free product.

It's not against the law, generally, to sell goods which are past their expiration dates.     You could contact the local health department to report the issue and also the better business bureau to report the problems.     If the product was a dairy or fresh meat product, the health department might get involved in that case if it happened routinely.

An expired hostess brand type of snack cake would most likely NOT make you ill.     It might not taste as fresh, but I don't think that it will make you sick.     I think that maybe your mind got the best of you OR you caught a bug somewhere else.

I have purchased items at a local discount grocery store.   I don't buy most products which are past their expiration date, but have on occasion, and they've been fine.    Our local dairy told me that milk is generally good for around 10 days past the "use by" date.     I've had milk go bad before the "use by" date as well.    With bread, just store in the refrigerator (I don't use that much and it ruins if I don't, so I store in the fridge and toast when I need it-it can last for a couple of weeks past the use by date).

The simple solution, stop shopping there.    That way, you won't be aggravated for wasting your money on expired goods and you won't harm your relationship with the owners.

  6. Contact the information on the package of the food. You probably won't be reporting the store owners though. But maybe you can get your money back. It's your health, so I would get over the fact that you have a good relationship with the owners of the store. You could develop any residual problem, infections, developing overgrown yeast, anything. Let them know! You never know, they might appreciate you telling them that they're products are extremely past the expiration date. If they get hard feelings, you don't need to do business with them. I hope that everything turns out well. 1

  7. It is not illegal to sell food beyond the expiration date.  The food manufacterer would likely stop supplying them if they knew but they are most likely not buying from a manufacterer but rather a discounter who sells expired food.  However, if you find an expired hostess product, you call hostess and tell them where you bought it.

  8. In addition to contacting the local health department you can also contact BBB (Better busisness bureau) at www.bbb.org . Im sure you can even call a health inspector to check it out.

  9. You can call the Department of Public Health.  You should be able to find that number in your local Yellow Pages.  I hope no one else gets sick that is disgusting they know that they are selling past dated food and they should be reported nice people or not.  They are trying to make money off of people when they should be spending money to buy new fresher products.  Think about it how nice are these people really?  Don't you think that they know what they are doing?

  10. Invite them over for dinner and then feed them food from their store.

  11. call from a cell phone it will say private call so they wont beable to trace it

  12. Call your local Health Dept....they should let yo know how to go about complaining about this...wow....has no one else gotten sick from their foods at all ????

  13. call your local health department they can point you in the right direction.
