Urgent help with spyware problem.?

Question

I mistakenly downloaded an active X control.Well I get a ton of popups.I went to my add /remove programs and I removed some,well I tried to remove the others and it said ''you must restart to remove,but it doesnt give me a chance to remove as it shuts my computer down and restarts,however it does not remove the programs.I have Windows XP.

find a good registry cleaner.  I use system mechanic professional or Trendmicro makes one that comes with it's professional version antivirus.  The spyware that you downloaded restarts and recopies itself every time the computer is restarted so either get the sys mechanic program (like $20 from target) or wipe the computer clean and reinstall windows for best results

Try a online virus scan here are some address to try Safety.Live.com...TrendMicro.com...get some protection Comodo.com is offering a complete security suite free and yes they can be trusted if you want to do it yourself I recommend Avira.com along with Safer-Networking.org(spybot search&destory) or SpywareBlaster from majorgeeks.com or Lavasoft.com...MalwareBytes.org is another good one to consider althrough the last two don't offer free protection some even recommend two anti-spyware scanners just to be on the safe side the other bit of advice i have to offer is external firewalls they hardwire to the machine with usb or firewire hook up now thats cutting edge tech.Remember paid is usally better than free however since Comodo.com kind offer that may not be the case anymore...if this doesn't work try going into safemode by rebooting and tapping the F8 key choose safemode with networking and then going to Safety.Live .com it's the only one i know that works in safemode
