Question:

Urgent question about chinchilla heath care

I have a six month old female chinchilla. She seems fine but today I noticed her p**p was a little different. It looks normal but when I break it, the inside is greenish like grass and it's a bit softer. It's not mushy or wet, just when pressed it feels softer. Is this normal? I feed her mixture of alfalfa and timothy hay in mixture but mostly alfalfa. Sometimes I give her orchard grass as well. I do give her small amount of treats and I think it's in moderation. I give her pellets as well but she doesn't seem to like it a lot although she never rejects it.

Please help :( I don't think she has diarrhea because it's not mushy. I was just worried whether it is normal or not, or what should I do?

  1. take out the alfalfa because alfalfa is not a particularly good thing to feed a chinchilla regularly.

  2. I'd take out the alfalfa...that should only be given as treats and nothing that they get alot of or constantly. Make sure she is getting some type of pelleted food or her digestive system may not work properly.

I'd say it's nothing to worry about too much as long as it isn't diarrhea

  3. I wouldn't worry about this TOO much, just keep an eye out and watch for behavior changes like lethargy and lack of grooming. Also, if the p**p gets diarrhea-like then make her a vet appointment. Just make sure she's eating her pellets, that might have something to do with it if she's not eating enough of them.

It's always nice to see a question like this, though. Kudos for being aware of your chin's health!!
