Question:

Urgent question about chinchilla

I'm currently having a 6 month old female chinchilla. I have a zillion questions about keeping her. Is it ok to give her timothy, alfalfa and pellets at the same time? Should I put them separately or is it ok to mix everything in one bowl? I feed her twice a day at about mid noon and 9PM, is it too much? Too little? Is it ok to wake him up at mid noon and feed her because during the day she seems to be resting although she never rejects the food. How much a day is best to give her?

Also I try to tame her, she would sit on my lap and eats the treats off my hand but that's it. If there's no treat she just runs away from me. Is this normal? How long will it take to normally tame a chinchilla?

Any dos and don'ts that I should know about keeping chinchilla? Any advice? I'm very stressed right now because I used to have 2 of them and the other one just died yesterday. It's a painful experience and I'm very serious now about keep the last one, she's all I have now.

Thank you very much! I'd appreciate your help so much.

  1. well twice a day is fine yes you can mix the food and feed her early morning and night if you have eny more questions you can email me at nikirose71@yahoo.com

  2. Only need one type of hay seperatley and pellets seperatley in a bowl. feed her new pellets every other day and keep the bowl with food in it all the time! Its normal some chins dont like to be touched. A while. Give him some chinchilla vitamins.

  3. Timothy hay is the best for chinchillas, so I'd suggest only giving her that. And it's best to keep the food and pellets separately. But you shouldn't have to feed her twice a day. They sleep during the day anyways, so why would she need to eat? If you were going to feed her twice a day, I'd suggest at night and then again in the early morning. But remember, chinchillas can become overweight quite easily, so I'd say once a day would be enough.

Yes, that's very normal for a chinchilla. It can take years before they can become tame, but I'd say a few months at the least.

Do make sure that your chinchilla does not become lonely, because this can be the cause of many serious issues. Do make sure she's getting exercise every night. Do make sure you're not over feeding her treats. Don't give her nuts of any sort, as they can cause serious health issues.
