Question:

Urinary track infection in baby?

How can you tell if your baby has a urinary track infection? I feel like maybe my baby (5 months old) might have one. She pees many times during the night and is very squirmy. Her pee is yellow ( I caught it in a white bowl to check one time), but I was told that baby pee is clear. Also when she pees she grunts a little. She has a rash that she's never had before and wants to scratch at it. I'm worried about this because this runs in my family.

  1. The best thing to do would be to get her checked. It may not be a urinary tract infection, ti may well be something different. My daughter is prone to infections and the like, and she has had both a UTI and thrush - they do present with similar symptoms.

With a UTI, your daughter will be likely to freuquently pee small amounts and scream whilst doing so. She will be irritable and probably have a fever. To find out if she has a UTI, you will need to take her to the doctor. When my daughter had one, she stayed in an emergency room, with a pee bag attached to her, to collect anything for testing. However, I believe some doctors/hospitals have a different procedure.

With thrush, she is likely to have a rash around her v****a, with small red dots. She will scratch and it constantly, and also be irritable. The pee may irritate this rash. The thrush can be treated with an over the counter product. If you do use a steroid product though, be sure to use a moisteriser for a few days after using it, because it will dry the area out. The thrush should be gone within a few days, however be sure taht you continue it for the recommended course, to prevent any reccurences.

  2. contact the pediatrician.

  3. I think you should talk to your doctor.  She could have Kidney Reflux.  I have two girls with this.  Don't let it go, okay?  If she has it, every infection can cause scarring on the kidneys.  She would need to be on a daily maintenance medication such as Septra or Bactrum.

ETA:  I think that you will not be able to catch the urine.  They will need a clean catch specimen, so will need to do a catheter.

  4. The best thing to do is call the pediatrician and they can test a babies urine too.  My son was 9 months old with one and they had me catch a little urine for them to test so if you managed to catch some in a bowl one time they may be able to give you a cup to try to catch some urine for testing.

  5. The only way to be sure is to goto pediatrician and get a urine test done.  UTI is a bacterial infection, so fever is another symptom to watch out for, so take her temperature as well.  Pee being yellow is not really a symptom.

    Good luck.
