Urine Scent Carpet = Vinegar Water?

I have 4 cats and 3 dogs so my carpet smells horrible. Two of the dogs are chihuahuas so they have accidents. There is no point in getting a new carpet probably smell same.

I've read vinegar and water works to get rid of smell and keeps them from trying to go in same spot. How much vinegar and how much water?

I've tried pet odor remover carpet cleaner in a wet vac but still smelled.

  1. Vinegar and water does not work. It masks the smell for you, but you need to use something that removes the smell for the dog.

Pet odor remover carpet cleaner is not used in a wet vac; far too little gets on the carpet. Proper odor remover is sprayed or poured onto the stains and left to sit for a few days, THEN vacuumed off.

    Vinegar and water is useless.

  2. Home Depot has this Pet Stain remover..you want to get the enzyme cleaner that breaks down the urine...

  3. call a professional to permently get the smell out

  4. I have 9 cats, so I have tried many, many solutions to cat-urine odors in carpet.

The issue with vinegar and water?  Vinegar temporarily rids the carpet of the smell, but them you have a strong vinegar odor as well as the cat-urine odor that returns in a few days.  Nasty.

You must use an enzymatic cleaner that "eats" the urine odor and stain.

I use Unique products http://www.stainandodorsolution.com/inde...  I buy them at my local Ace Hardware.  I have tried just about every enzymatic urine cleaner there is, and Unique products work like no other.

Unfortunately a Wet Vac doesn't work well (I know this; I've tried).  I invested $200 in a Bissell Proheat 2X http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41... (available at any Wal-Mart, Lowe's, or Home Depot).  You can put your enzymes into the reservoir and then steam your carpet.  Works beautifully.  There are less expensive versions, but the Proheat 2X heats the water itself and gets the carpet really clean.

I realize these are expensive solutions.  However, old urine in carpet can pose a health hazard to you and your pets.

I am also ripping up much of my carpet and replacing it with tile.  Easy to clean, doesn't absorb odors.  I'm even replacing my wood baseboard with tile baseboards.  (The things we do when we love our pets!)

  5. I also have cats and dogs and have tried everything out there.  I have my own carpet steam cleaner and when I clean my carpets (about twice a year) I add to the cleaning solution about a cup of urine stain remover and about a cup of Febreze (the one for furniture or carpets not air freshener.)  It works for me.

I haven't tried it but I have also heard that if you add moth balls to your vacuum cleaner bag it helps to keep them away.  Supposedly they don't like the smell, although I can't think of anything that smells worse than cat urine.

  6. I have cats and dogs also and the only help I received was from this web site  www.carpetcleaningstains.com

Check out the site, they have a section on cats and one for dogs.

A 50/50 on the vinegar and water and there are other solutions as well.

Once you wet the carpet, the urine smell will ALWAYS come back...:(

  7. try SOL-U-MEL, this stuff works great on pet stains!!

  8. carpet cleaner can actually make the stain set in the carpet. If you see them do something, clean with water only. First, blot what you can with paper towel (use a show to press it in and get up all the liquid you can), then use your wet vac with h20 only. After carpet is dry, try a dry power odor absorber. They are all natural and they absorb all odors. You just vacuum them up in 24 hours. I recommend something like Natures Miracle. I also suggest piddle pads or liter training (for dogs too)
