Ursa Major big in the Chinese Irish Cultural Academy Handicap at Curragh
The Chinese Irish Cultural Academy Handicap will be hosted by Curragh over a mile and four furlongs on Sunday, 10th June. Competing for the €8,970 prize money is a line-up of eight three-year-old runners.
Only two candidates among all the contestants have raced at Curragh and have failed miserably there. All the entries have already set footings in the new season.
One of the most promising and lightly raced entries is Ursa Major, Galileo’s three-year-old bay colt out of mare, Inchyre. Through his three career starts, the colt has bagged one race and has ended second in the remaining.
His career debut was in the Navan Lock & Key 3YO Maiden on 16th March at Dundalk over a mile and two and a half furlongs. Ursa Major finished the closest to the winner, China One, who led by 2 ¼ lengths.
Taking up the third slot was Tucker Casey while the 7/4 favourite of the race, Daliyan, ended fourth on the track of eight.
Not waiting for too long to show case his actual potential and ability, the Irish colt got a firm grip of his second career chance. He was the 2/1 joint favourite of the Fund Raising Made Easy At Dundalk 3YO Maiden on 4th April at Dundalk over
a mile and two and a half furlongs.
Qualifying as the runner up was Voleuse De Coeurs while the other joint favourite, Unanimous, ended fifth on the track of nine.
His third career try was in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund 3YO (C&G) Race at Navan over a mile and two furlongs on 29th April. The race was won by the 4/6 favourite, Athens, who led the runner up, Ursa Major, by two lengths.
Coming at terms with the third position was Azamata.
The three-year-old has never raced at Curragh and today will be his first try there. The jockey this time will also be new as he will be riding with B. A. Curtis. A second career win through the fourth outing is a decent rate to go at. However, the rest
of the line-up is not to be under estimated.
