Urszula Radwanska beats Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor to clear round one - Tashkent Open 2012
World number 40, Urszula Radwanska, pinned down the 112th ranked Spanish professional, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, in the opening round of the Tashkent Open at the hard courts in Uzbekistan. It was a competitive battle
but the second seed Pole clearly had an upper hand throughout the battle of an hour and 46 minutes; clinching the triumph in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
Flor commenced the match with a serve hold and the 21-year-old Pole followed her up. However, the second serve game for the 20-year-old Spaniard was a bit of the teaser. She had an opportunity to sail past without any damage on
two different occurrences but couldn’t convert them in her favour and finally, the 40th ranked Pole snatched a breakpoint to take a lead.
No damage was done to either party in the following three games and a swap of breakthroughs kept the second seed Pole’s lead intact. She was close on winning the match in the 10th game but couldn’t convert any of the
allotted two breakpoints. In the following game, Flor had three marvellous opportunities to level the scores by breaking her opponent’s serve but she failed to do so and allowed to Pole to sneak the first set victory after a hard fought battle.
The second set witnessed a complete outbreak from the Flor in the first phase. She was cruising along; didn’t make a single mistake on her serve whilst grabbed two breakpoints to post a resounding lead of 5-1. She was just four
points away from winning the second set and enforcing the final battle into play.
However, a clinical comeback from the 21-year-old Pole was witnessed at the hard courts of Tashkent. She won a breakpoint in the seventh game to hold her opponent from winning the second set; repeated the performance in the ninth
game to diminish the trail of breakpoints and held her serve successfully to tie the scores at 5-5.
The momentum was with the Pole star who dismissed her opponent in the 11th game; winning the third breakthrough on the trot and survived the scare in the following game to win the second set.
The winner of the clash between Vitalia Diatchenko and Nigina Abduraimova will face Radwanska in round two.
