Urszula Radwanska breezes past Lenka Wienerova into the main draw – Brussels Open 2012
Seeded first in the qualifying draw, Urszula Radwanska of Poland made short work of Slovakia’s Lenka Wienerova, ranked 263rd in the world, in the final qualifier at the Brussels Open in Belgium on Monday. The Polish
player took only one hour and 10 minutes to topple Wienerova in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 and advance to the main draw.
Radwanska made the best possible start, as she hit a blow to the Slovakian in the very first game of the match and consolidated on it to build a 2-0 lead in the opener. Wienerova, though, played amazingly to grab eight straight
points afterwards, capturing two games in a row to level the scores at 2-2. However, her level of play went down again, as she got broken in the seventh and could not stage a comeback this time, losing it 4-6.
The 21-year-old, Radwanska, neither delivered an ace nor committed any double fault. She maintained a low first serve percentage of 57 but had an incredible conversion rate, winning 11 of the 13 points on them. The Polish youngster
failed to fend off the only break threat she faced but compensated by converting both of her own chances in the opener.
In the second set, Radwanska and Wienerova started by breaking each other in the opening two games to even out the proceedings at 1-1. They held their serves in the following two, taking the score at 2-2. It was completely Radwanska’s
show later on, as she did not allow the Slovakian to claim even a single game, claiming a couple of breakthroughs and making the most of them to close it 6-2.
Radwanska and Wienerova gave mixed performance on their serves in the second set. Both of them were unable to hit any ace and committed three pathetic double faults. Radwanska’s first serve percentage dropped further, as she put
in merely 52 percent of the first deliveries but once again her conversion rate was impressive, clinching 10 of the 14 points on them. In comparison, Wienerova kept her first serve percentage at 83 but managed to win just nine of the 19 points.
Urszula is the younger sister of Agnieszka Radwanska, who is currently at the third spot in the WTA Singles Rankings. Playing her first tournament of this season, Urszula was beaten by her elder sibling in straight sets 1-6, 1-6
in the first round at the Apia International Sydney in January.
The 90th ranked, Urszula, will play American contender, Varvara Lepchenko, in the first round of the main draw.
