Urszula Radwanska downs Olga Savchuk in the 1st round – Bank of the West Classic 2011
Day three of the Bank of the West Classic 2011 was the continuation of the first round singles matches. Meeting for the first time on the outdoor hard courts at the Taube Family Tennis Center, were the German born Pole, Urszula
Radwanska, and the Ukrainian, Olga Savchuk.  The Pole won the match in a straight two sets 6-4, 6-2 victory.
During the first set of the match both the players had won and saved fifty percent each of their break points. Although Olga’s serve was above average, her defence was faltering and she was only able to win thirty seven percent
of her total return points and with a wobbly serve she struck two line faults, however, she had aced twice.
On the other hand, Urszula had luck and a unique game on her side, she had won the toss and serving first managed to hit sixty three percent of the first serves on target and also had the same percentage win in her total service
points. Her return serve was an excellent display of Newton’s third law of motion; everything has an equal and opposite reaction, hence, she was able to rebound all the shots that were thrown at her. The Pole won the set 6-4.
The Ukrainian (Olga) smashed an ace and opened the second set to 1-0; during the set she aced twice. After taking a thrashing in the second set Olga had slightly improved her return serve and was able to win thirty nine percent
of her total return points but they too were below the par!
Both the players were not able to save their break points but managed to capitalise on each other’s break points a hundred percent. So now one wonders, who got a competitive edge…well of course it was Urszula who had the competitive
edge because the number of break points won by her was more than her opponents.
The 20-year-old (Urszula) won the match because of her strong serve and defence, across the board, she won eighteen more percent of total return serves than her opponent along with winning fifty nine percent of her total set points,
she therefore won the match with a 2-0 lead against her opponent.
The German born Pole had reached her career high ranking of world number 62 on the 10th of August, 2009. This year she has had eleven wins and fourteen loses out of all the matches she has played. She will now be facing
the Japanese Ayumi Morita in second round of the tournament.
