Urszula Radwanska falls to Sofia Arvidsson in the quarter-final brawl – Brussels Open 2012
While the world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, powered her way into the semis of the Brussels Open, her younger sister, Urszula Radwanska, had a terrible quarter-final clash on Thursday. The 90th ranked Pole was
overwhelmed by the sheer brilliance of the Swede veteran, Sofia Arvidsson, felling in straight sets, 5-7, 4-6, to crash out of the clay court event in Brussels, Belgium.
Showing wonders in the qualifying draw, the 21-year-old Pole carried on her main round voyage with the same intensity until the quarter-finals. Urszula was facing Arvidsson for the first time in her professional career and had
no idea of the belligerent game play of the Swede. She posed solid resistance early in the contest but was eventually driven out of the contest by the pin-point hitting of the world number 62.
Arvidsson came under the lime light when she ousted the seventh seeded Chinese Tennis ace, Shuai Peng, in the opening round of the tournament. She hasn’t dropped a single set en route to the semi-final and has emerged as one of
the strong contenders for winning the Brussels title. The 28-year-old veteran was absolutely delighted to reach the final-four of the tournament and desires to claim her second championship title at this venue.
"I had played against her before so I know her game a little bit," Arvidsson said. "She and her sister are very smart, very different from all the other players. You don't get too much of a rhythm against them - one ball is deep,
the next ball is short, and they can come to the net too. You never get the same ball. Urszula was playing very well and it was difficult in the beginning, but then I started playing more aggressive and things got better. It was a tight match."
It will be the seventh WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) semi-final for Arvidsson, who has two championship crowns in her bag until date. She will take on the unseeded Romanian starlet, Simona Halep, in the round of four on Friday.
Halep stunned the fourth seed Slovakian, Dominika Cibulkova, in the quarter-final round on Thursday afternoon.
