Urszula Radwanska gusts away Mandy Minella in round two - Guangzhou Int’l Women's Open 2012
World number 39, Urszula Radwanska, eased into the quarter-final of the GRC Bank Guangzhou International Women's Open at the expense of the 66th ranked Luxembourgian professional, Mandy Minella, on the morning of Wednesday.
She thrashed the 26-year-old competitor in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 utilizing just a fraction over 74 minutes at the hard courts of China.
Previously, the two athletes had locked horns against one another on two different occurrences. The initial battle was fought way back in 2006 and that was easily won by the 21-year-old Pole. However, the last year’s contest was
inched by the 26-year-old Minella who dismissed the Pole star in the first qualifying round of the French Open Championship.
Minella and Radwanska traded breakpoints in the first two games of the match. The Luxembourgian failed to hold serve for the second straight time and went down 1-2 in the opening set. The Pole youngster swirled the momentum in
her favour with a comfortable serve hold that protected the breakpoint and extended the lead to 3-1.
Fourth seeded Radwanska retained the momentum intact and carried on an emphatic run into the sixth game of the match; winning another breakpoint to make it 4-1. A serve hold to love extended the lead to 5-1 in favour of the Pole
who looked set to register a breadstick in the opening set. However, a short turnaround witnessed a tight serve hold for Minella but she couldn’t break serve in the following game to keep the set alive.
The second set witnessed a serve hold at both ends before a breakthrough came in favour of the Luxembourg citizen. She was leading the scores at 3-1 but couldn’t manage to protect the breakthrough and gifted the crucial game to
her rival who levelled the scores at 3-3 with a serve hold. Radwanska squeezed two breakpoints on the trot in the following three games and held her serve to win the match in stylish fashion.
Urszula Radwanska is scheduled to take on the likes of the fifth seed defending champion, Chanelle Scheepers, in the quarter-final battle of the tournament. It will be an entertaining contest to say the least.
