Urszula Radwanska ousts Chanelle Scheepers in the quarters - Guangzhou Int’l Women's Open 2012
World number 39, Urszula Radwanska, thrashed away the 43rd ranked South African defending champion, Chanelle Scheepers, in the quarter-final of the GRC Bank Guangzhou International Women's Open on Wednesday. She registered
emphatic straight sets 6-1, 7-5 score line at the hard courts of China and slide into the final four of the tournament.
Scheepers could only resist for an hour and 38 minutes; probably the pathetic performance in the first half of the match dismantled her confidence that restricted her free flowing game style in the second phase.
It was a perfect revenge for the 21-year-old Pole who was defeated by the South African in the previous edition of the tournament in quarters as well. So, the revenge mission is over for the 39th ranked Pole who has
equalized the head-to-head scores after a complete year.
The 28-year-old South African began the match with a serve hold and her opponent under the woods but couldn’t squeeze an early breakthrough that would have settled her nerves. However, the Pole star didn’t waste the fourth opportunity
to break serve in the following game that gave her a lead of 2-1. She posted a serve hold to love that extended the lead to 3-1.
Nothing was going right for the defending champ. She was in all sorts of trouble and mere single point throughout her third serve game clearly depicted her lack of timing and miserable shot selection. She was trailing 1-5 by the
end of the sixth game and an onslaught from Radwanska ended the set in the following game.
Radwanska commenced the second set with full command and soon thrashed her opponent to a trail of 1-3 courtesy a breakpoint. However, the fifth seed Scheepers stayed cool and fought back to diminish the lead in the following game.
She held her serve after a bit of trouble that equalized the scores at 5-5.
No drama was witnessed in the following five games as both players capitalized on their serves to make it 6-5 in favour of the Pole with her opponent serving to keep the match alive. The defending champion failed to enforce the
tie-breaker and allowed her competitor to book a date with Su-Wei Hsieh in the semis.
