Urszula Radwanska outplays Alexa Glatch in the second round qualies – Brussels Open 2012
In the second round of the qualifying draw of the Brussels Open, the top seed Pole contender, Urszula Radwanska, strained past the 22-year-old American opponent, on Sunday. The 90th ranked Pole battled hard for two hours
and 12 minutes to settle the enthralling three-setter at 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2, in her favour.
Being played on the clay courts of the Royal Primerose Tennis Club in Brussels, Belgium, the contest witnessed some glimpses of the world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, from her younger sister. The 21-year-old Pole suffered
early shocker in the contest by losing the opening set tie-breaker but came up a thumping reply in the later parts of the match to turn the tables on her opponent. Radwanska reeled off the last two sets with the identical scores of 6-2, 6-2, to advance to
the qualifying competition of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event.
Radwanska had already defeated Glatch in the second round of the 2009 Indian Wells Masters but it was a much tougher battle for her on Sunday. She was off to a relatively sloppy start in the opening set but steadily gathered up
her pace to race past the American contender. Glatch met the top seed Pole neck-to-neck in all aspects of the game to test her skills earlier on but tended to lose her steam later. She suffered two serve breaks from Radwanska in the opener but came up with
the same number of break point conversions to deadlock the scores at 6-6. A tie-breaker round was enforced into play and the American youngster got the better of her superior-ranked opponent to get one up early.
Tide turned in the following set, as Radwanska came up with a five-game rampage to rocket away to 5-0 in no time. Glatch responded with a serve break in the seventh game but another cracking blow from the top seed left her stranded
at 2-6. Radwanska carried on with her winning momentum in the decisive set and stung three more serve breaks to wrap up victory at 6-2.
Radwanska will face the unseeded Slovakian, Lenka Wienerova, in the qualifying competition of the tournament on Monday.
