Urszula Radwanska registers huge upset against Marion Bartoli – Brussels Open 2012
Local crowd at the outdoor clay courts of the Royal Primerose Tennis Club in Brussels, Belgium, was in for a huge surprise on Wednesday, when the second seed French power house, Marion Bartoli, crashed out of the Brussels Open.
The world number eight was toppled by the 21-year-old talented Pole competitor, Urszula Radwanska, in the second round brawl of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour event.
The 90th ranked Pole showed her amazing clay-court skills to register one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far. She displayed glimpses of her world number three elder sister, Agnieszka Radwanska, throughout
the matchup against Bartoli and eventually disposed of one of the hot favourites for winning the Brussels title. Radwanska was facing the eighth ranked Frenchwoman for the first time in her professional career and didn’t take long to get under the skin of
her. She overcame the early resistance from the second seed French and then went on all guns blazing to rocket away to victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Radwanska secured 24 out of 33 first serve points in the match and broke the French serve six out of 11 times en route to victory. On the other hand, Bartoli converted all of her three break opportunities in the contest but couldn’t
catch up with the fiery game play of Radwanska. The French appeared extremely sloppy in the second set of the match and was often found stranded on the court. The Pole qualifier kept belting assertive winners on regularity and used her rock solid baseline
defence to the optimum effect to register her 13th victory of the running season in style.
"Of course Marion is a great player, but I was just focusing on my game," Radwanska said in her post match reviews. "The crowd was really good to me today, it felt like I was at home. The courts are really nice and things have
been going well for me. I will just keep trying my best in my next match."
Radwanska will next face the unseeded Swede contender, Sofia Arvidsson, in the quarter-finals of the Brussels Open later this week.
