Urszula Radwanska sidelines Tamira Paszek and advances to round two – Brisbane International 2013
World number 31, Urszula Radwanska, dispatched the superior ranked Austria age-fellow, Tamira Paszek, in the opening round of the Brisbane International on Sunday. She battled back from a set-down stage to win the encounter 2-6,
6-0, 6-2. She defeated the same player in the Australian Open (juniors) event in 2007 and now registered a royal comeback to extend her stay at Brisbane.
The 22-year-old Pole showed some class in the competition and ruled the show after a dismal beginning. She smashed three aces in her progress towards the victory at the Pat Rafter Arena. However, she wasn’t too impressive with
her first and second serve conversion rate which might be a major factor in her downfall at the following stages of the tournament.
Paszek was quite sublime with her form at the start of the clash. She clinched the first breakthrough of the new season in the fourth game of the match and repeated a similar performance just a four games later to end the opening
set of the encounter in quick succession. She was cruising along at that stage and it looked like the contest will be over under an hour.
However, a resounding comeback was witnessed by the crowd at Brisbane. Radwanska hammered her opponent in the second set and registered a bagel, courtesy to a hat-trick of breakthroughs coupled with three serve holds. She bounced
back with a purpose on her mind and the momentum was also in her favour that helped her to form a strong foundation for the final thriller.
It was expected that the 30th ranked Austrian will not give up easily but Paszek couldn’t live up to the expectations and drowned to a trail of 0-4 at the start. With the lead of two breakpoints at the star, Radwanska
easily manoeuvred the ball without any pressure and made sure that she didn’t give easy points to her rival.
Paszek had her opponent under the cosh in the final game of the match but after five deuces, the Pole youngster managed to secure the first victory of the new season. She will play the winner of the match between Caroline Wozniacki
and the qualifier.
