Urszula Radwanska slides past Kurumi Nara into the second round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
World number 36, Urszula Radwanska, squashed the Japanese qualifier, Kurumi Nara, in the first round battle at the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Monday. The Pole dumped her rival in just 79 minutes; registering straight sets score
line of 6-2, 6-4.
Nara couldn’t hold her serve in the first game and a classic control of the proceedings from the 21-year-old Pole drowned her to a trail of 0-2. She just won a single point on her serve and gifted the second breakpoint to her rival
who protected the lead with a serve hold. Scores were pushed to 4-0.
Both players swapped breakpoints towards the ending stages of the match. Radwanska just had to hold serve to win the opening set during the eighth game and she did comfortably. It was a cracking performance from the upcoming Pole
star who looks to be following the footsteps of her elder sister, Agnieszka Radwanska.
An exchange of breakpoints at the starting phase of the second set helped the player to keep the scores together at 2-2. However, the turnaround was witnessed in the following two games when the Pole star dumped the 20-year-old
Japanese to a trail of two games courtesy a breakthrough and a serve hold.
Another trade of breakpoints didn’t hurt the cause of the Pole who looked set to take the encounter in the 10th game of the second set. Radwanska was under the cosh but didn’t surrender and extracted a well fought serve
hold to clinch the second round berth.
The triumph over Nara equalized the head-to-head scores to 1-1. Radwanska lost the qualifying round match of the Western and Southern Open in 2010 to Nara two years ago. However, the revenge mission is complete and more importantly
the 36th ranked Pole is improving with each match.
Urszula Radwanska has contested the semi-finals of the last two tournaments she has contested. So, she is in emphatic run of form at the moment. It will not be long when she will be joining in the likes of top seeded players amongst
the elite contenders’ squad during big tournaments.
Next up for Radwanska is the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic.
