Urszula Radwanska strains past Andreja Klepac into the main round – Qatar Ladies Open 2012
World number 84, Urszula Radwanska, strained past the 25-years-old Slovenian contestant, Andreja Klepac, to qualify for the main draw of the Qatar Ladies Open tournament on Sunday. Both players locked horns for the second
time in their professional careers and the Pole registered the win with cumulative scores of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
The two players contested in the opening round of the Pattaya Women’s Open. It was the Slovenian contestant who ousted the wildcard entrant of the tournament, Radwanska, in the straight sets but this time the Pole had her
revenge; more importantly, booking a berth in the main round of the tournament.
Klepac was struggling to find any consistency in the results; winning than losing on regular intervals. It was difficult to speculate anything about her. On the other hand, the Pole was settling into some sort of form; registering
five wins in her last nine matches.
The Slovenian contestant started the proceedings. No breakpoints were played for the first four games with scores progressing to 2-2. Radwanska picked up the momentum and improvised by playing most points on the net. The
strategy worked as she registered the first breakthrough of the match. A sudden change in the game style dismantled the concentration of the Slovenian who couldn’t hold on to her serve in the seventh game as well. With two breakpoints under her belt, the Pole
registered a comprehensive triumph in the opening set of the match.
A flurry of breakpoints for the Pole eased her nerves as she capitalized on her serves to consolidate her position with a 4-0 lead. A remarkable comeback from the Slovenian helped her bag four successive games; squaring the
scores at 4-4 with couple of breakpoints under her belt. Momentum swung in favour of the inferior ranked contestant who capitalized on it with another breakpoint in the twelfth game; settling the set scores at one set apiece.
In the decisive battle, both players started off well. No trade of breakpoints was witnessed for the first four games with scores ticking over to 2-2. First breakthrough came in the fifth game when the Pole struck a couple
of breathtaking cross-court winners. She further enhanced the lead with a successful hold; taking the scores to 4-2.
An exchange of breakthroughs in the following games helped the scores progressing to 5-3 in favour of the Pole. Radwanska stayed composed and won the main round spot against the Czech contestant, Lucie Safarova.
