Urszula Radwanska stuns Ana Ivanovic in the second round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
A stunning outcome was witnessed on the hard courts of Tokyo when the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, fell out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open at the hands of the polish underdog, Urszula Radwanska. The 11th seeded
Serbian tennis ace laboured extremely hard for one hour and 57 minutes but couldn’t post a convincing performance. Radwanska finished off the contest at, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, to book a spot in the third round of the WTA Premier event in Japan.
Ivanovic was outplayed by her own error-ridden game play, coughing piles of unforced errors to allow her opponent take the upper hand. The former top ranked contestant spilled a total of 12 double faults to award some un-fought
points to the Polish underdog. She had a below par serve precision of 46 per cent in the match and converted four out of 11 break opportunities to finish on the losing side in the end. On the other hand, Radwanska came up with six out of nine cracking break
points to reign supreme.
The 12th ranked Serbian had a desirable start in the opening set and launched an all-round onslaught right from the beginning to take hold of the momentum. She broke Radwanska’s serve once to attain lead and carried
on with her impetus to wrap up the opening set at 6-3.
Tide turned in the very next set, as Ivanovic’s seven double faults presented Radwanska ample opportunity to nail three cracking serve breaks. The 21-year-old Pole youngster bettered Ivanovic in every segment of the game and clinched
the second set at 6-4 to bring her back on even terms.
Ivanovic was expected to storm back in the decisive set but it went the other way round. Radwanska played exquisite tennis and never allowed the Serbian to generate any sort of pace in the set. The 21-year-old stung three more
break points in reply to Ivanovic’c lone serve break and raced away to her surprising victory at 6-2.
Radwanska will carry on her dream run in Tokyo and will face the world number six, Angelique Kerber of Germany, in the third round of the tournament later this week.
