Urszula Radwanska takes out Francesca Schiavone in round one – Kremlin Cup 2012
World number 30, Urszula Radwanska, took out the former French Open Champion, Francesca Schiavone, in the first round battle of the Kremlin Cup on Monday. In Moscow, the 21-year-old Pole squashed the 32-year-old Italian in straight
sets 6-3, 6-1 in just 67 minutes.
Ironically, the Pole star had defeated the experienced Italian in the previous head-to-head battle as well. It took place in Hobart, almost three years ago. So, she owns some good memories against the former world number four.
Now, the lead in the head-to-head series for Radwanska is 2-0.
The opening set witnessed a quick breakthrough for the 34th ranked Italian who took a lead of 2-0 courtesy a serve hold. However, the youngster from Poland regrouped and fought back to equalize the scores in the fourth
game courtesy a breakthrough. Moreover, the momentum kept running in favour of the 21-year-old Pole who broke serve in the sixth game as well to take a lead of 4-2.
Schiavone was very close to break serve in the following game but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity allotted to her. A lethal forehand winner down the line from Radwanska helped her to retain the lead. She held her serve in
the ninth game without any scare and led the set scores by one nil.
Radwanska began the second set in emphatic fashion. She lost just one point in her two serve games and grabbed a couple of breakthroughs in succession on the other end to make it 4-0 at the start. Schiavone wasn’t able to hold
the Pole who was on song. She just managed a single serve hold before losing another breakpoint in the seventh game that rounded off the proceedings from the contest.
It was a good start from the Pole starlet who will face a tough competition against the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the second round. The 22-year-old Dane is a third seed contestant in the tournament and received
a first round Bye so hasn’t officially commenced the tour yet. It will be an interesting battle considering the form of both players that is sky-rocketing at the moment.
