Urszula Radwanska upsets Marina Erakovic in the second round – Bank of the West Classic 2012
While the Pole tennis ace, Agnieszka Radwanska, grabbed the world number two spot after her dream run at Wimbledon Championships, her younger sister, Urszula Radwanska, continued to impress all the tennis lovers with her stunning performances. The 21-year-old outplayed the world number 50, Marina Erakovic, in the second round of the Bank of the West Classic tournament on Thursday’s eve.
57th ranked Pole youngster took two hours and 10 minutes to settle the three-set thriller at 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to book a spot in the quarter-final rounds of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event in Stanford, USA. She exhibited another top notch performance to route the superior ranked opponent in a stiff battle, moving a step closer to her maiden WTA championship title.
Erakovic defeated the Pole contender in twin sets, 6-4, 6-4, in the opening round of the Wimbledon Championships last month but Radwanska didn’t take it long to avenge her defeat from the Kiwi rival. Erakovic was seeded number eight in the tournament draw and wasn’t expected to fall in the second round. It was the sheer brilliance and skills of the 21-year-old that forced her to succumb in the third set of the match to finish her run in Stanford.
Radwanska delivered 62 per cent of her first serve on target, winning 31 out of 53 points on it and further clinching 17 out of 33 points on the second serve. The Pole contestant crafted a total of 15 break points in the entire matchup but only six conversions proved sufficient for her to wrap up victory. Erakovic also registered five out of eight serve breaks in the contest but dropped some crucial points to let her opponent surpass her. Her five double faults on critical moments of the match proved extremely taxing for her, eventually forcing her to finish on the losing side in the end.
The unseeded Pole will square off against the American lucky looser from the qualifying draw, Coco Vandeweghe, in the quarter-final round of Bank of the West Classic tournament. Vandeweghe registered the biggest upset of the tournament so far by disposing of the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round clash.
