The most famous Uruguay cultural icon is actually a drink called "Mate" pronounced (Mahtay) Everybody drinks it, everywhere you walk. I was in Uruguay earlier this year and noticed that people carry their thermos with them and drink Mate every chance they get. It's a herb beverage, like a tea, but stronger.
