Uruguay’s Women’s team clinch Pan American Challenge Cup title beating Guyana 6-0 – Hockey Update
The Pan American Challenge Cup hockey tournament has been concluded at the Deodoro Hockey Complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where Uruguay’ Women’s team outclassed their Guyanese counterparts by 6-0 in the women’s final of the tournament which was played
on Sunday, August 7. Both teams have qualified for the 2013 Pan American Cup as they finished in the top two in the event.
The final match was quite similar to the group match between the two sides but was a more dominant performance by the champions, Uruguay, who defeated the same side by 2-0 in their final group match played a day earlier on Saturday, August 6.
The Uruguay ladies completely controlled the tempo of the game from the starting whistle to the end as they scored four goals in the first thirty five minutes while the remaining two in the second half of the game whereas their Guyanese opponents remained
goalless throughout the match.
The first half started with a great action by the Uruguay ladies as they took the early lead in the 5th minute when Lucia de Maria scored the opening goal for the champions. Soon after the opener, Uruguay doubled their lead and this time the scorer
was Isabel Olaso with a wonderful open play effort. The champions continued pressing the Guyanese counterparts throughout the first half by scoring two more goals before the interval. In the 21st minute Uruguay women were awarded a penalty corner
to which Teresa Viana made no mistake and converted it into their goal of the match.
Although, the Guyanese remained on the back foot for most of the time yet they had their chances but those were not enough to be a threat for Uruguay who, on the other side, persistently increased their attacks and scored their fourth goal of the match just
before the interval. The scorer was Paula Carvalho.
In the second half, the Guyanese were more disciplined in their defence as compared to the first thirty five minutes of the game. They defended their goalpost very well but not as well as required to stop the Uruguay ladies who scored two more goals in the
second half. Virginia Besio scored the fifth one in the 42nd minute while Florencia Norbis made the final strike of the match.
