I got my cousin Nintendo DS, which operates with a electrical charger...I also bought a universal convertor that is compatible with indian electricity

but my dad says indian electricity is notoriously bad, and buying this product could be a bad idea if i'm relying on a convertor to play this as it may fry the system

what yall think?

  1. While the domestic power supply in U.S. is 110 Volts, the same in India is 220, 230 or 240 volts.  If you have a convertor, the electrical products from US can be used in India.

  2. I had the opportunity to try out this exact same scenerio, when I was asked upon to charge a Nintendo DS in India, countless number of times.

There is absolutely no problem, provided you pick up a locally made transformer from India, which is about the size of a universal adapter.  This does 2 things:

    (a) sort of modulates the electric current so that it has less chance of frying your system, keeping in mind that Indian electricity is bad and it varies in CPS (thats what an electric engineer tells me)

    (b) Reduces the electric current from 220V AC to 110 V AC so that your system will operate in the same range as it was designed.

Almost all Indian electric appliance stores (even small ones) in big cities carry this transformer. Funny thing is, it is even made so that you do not have to use an adapter, and you can hook in your US appliances in to that transformer directly. Cost about Rs. 400 or so (US $10 say).

  3. The power supply at all the major cities remain steady at 220 V 50Htz AC. But, it fluctuates some times . I don't think it would harm your system .

I bought few equipments in Japan and use them with a converter in India . They work fine.

  4. Keep in mind AC- 220 V is the common current flow in India. With proper converter there should not be any problem in operating electrical things from US.  Indian electricity is good and India is emerging as an economic power in the world. I beg to differ with your Dad's views.

  5. With the converter electrical things do work fine in India.

But i had brought 2 Uniden cordless phone sets , one for me and one for a friend.. almost 5 yrs back. Mine still works fine but my friends phone just became useless the moment he plugged it on! :(

So really can't say ! I would just buy costly electrical items in India which are specially made for the region. And if they end up faulty i can ask for repair at the store when i buy them,
