Usb 2.0 hub - how to test it is working at the...

i have a usb 2.0 pci card and have just purchased a peak powered 4 port usb 2.0 high speed hub. i keep getting a message saying my device will work faster if i switch to 2.0.the pc engineer who sold me the hub has told me it is working properly. how can i check this?he also said that i might be getting this message erroneously if i don't connect everything in the right order. but apart from telling me to check that it is plugged in he didn't give any details of how to connect properly - just that i need to do it all in the right order.can you help please? i don't want to pay for something that isn't doing the job. thank you.
