Usb flash drive is not recognized

Question

I have a couple of flash drives that don't show up when I plug them into my laptop or docking station. The computer can see that it is plugged in and you can remove it by using the system tray stop icon but it does not turn up in windows explorer.
Could someone step me though giving the flash drives a drive letter?
