Usb port, and mp3 not showing as plugged in

Hi everybody. Well, my problem is that i have the USB connecter, and I connected it to the computer, and mp3 player. BUT it's saying that i DIDNT connect anything, and i can't download any songs. ( i also cant find any button in My computer) How can i fix this?? Help please.?
